MONGO: the sensor prototype under your deck

MONGO is a Skate Labs prototype that bolts under your deck to record pop, rotation, airtime and impact. Here's what it's built to do, and what hasn't happened yet.

Ever argued with your friend about who pops higher? MONGO is a Skate Labs idea for settling that kind of thing with numbers. But let's be clear up front: MONGO is a prototype. Nothing has shipped and no pre-orders have been taken.

What it is

MONGO is a small sensor that bolts under the deck at the truck baseplate. So it sits between your board and your truck, where your hardware already goes, not taped on top of the grip.

What it's built to record

The prototype is built to record:

  • Pop: how hard you snap the tail
  • Rotation: how the board spins and flips
  • Airtime: how long you're off the ground
  • Impact: how hard you land

Then it's meant to sync that motion with your clip, so you'd see the numbers lined up with the actual footage of the trick.

(And yeah, the name. Mongo pushing is when you push with your front foot. The sensor doesn't judge your push. Probably.)

When can you get one?

Not yet. The plan, as the docs describe it:

  1. The prototype has to survive real sessions first. Skating is rough on electronics, so this step actually matters.
  2. Only after that do pre-orders open.
  3. Pre-orders would be paid in USDC.
  4. PIXELBOARDS holders go first. (PIXELBOARDS are planned too. See What are PIXELBOARDS?.)

No price, no ship date. If someone's "selling MONGO pre-orders" right now, it's not Skate Labs.

The contest-judging idea

There's an idea floating around about whether sensor data like this could ever help judge contests. Skate Labs labels that "research, not a claim." So it's an open question they're thinking about, not a feature.

Honestly, style is half of skating, and no sensor is going to measure how good your arms look on a backside flip. Numbers are a fun extra, not the point.

How it'd connect to the rest

  • Skate Plus (planned) lists MONGO sync as one of its tools. See Skate Plus: free game, paid extras.
  • Global SKATE works without it. You'll never need a sensor to play SKATE with your friends.

Quick recap

  • MONGO is a prototype, nothing shipped, no pre-orders taken
  • Bolts under the deck at the truck baseplate
  • Built to record pop, rotation, airtime and impact, synced with your clip
  • Pre-orders only after it survives real sessions, paid in USDC, holders first
  • Contest judging is "research, not a claim"
  • Never needed to play

What number would you want to see first, pop or airtime?

Join the testers at skatelabs.app/testers. Global SKATE is a free Game of SKATE played by video, in testing on iPhone and Android, for skaters 18+. You never need a wallet or $SESH to play.
